From earliest times, flowers have held a special place in people's lives as observed in art, jewelry, stories and paintings. Throughout the centuries a rich symbolism as grown up around plants and their flowers. People used them to represent love and desire, events, feast days, birthdays and celebrations of all kinds. Even though much of the symbolism has been lost we still use flowers and plants in agreement with their age old symbolism. As an example, flowers continue to be used as love tokens because of their ability to stimulate us to open our hearts to love.

Apart from their visual beauty, and their wonderful aromas, why do you suppose that flowers are so universally sought after? It seems that they move us profoundly on a very subtle level that we may not consciously recognize or understand. In mystical art we often see the heart represented by a flower. An open blossom, often a rose, is a reminder to the heart to open up. Flowers stimulate the part of the aura (human energy field) that corresponds to the heart and thus explains their use as love tokens.

In this time, flowers are being used in a subtle but powerful new and healing way. The essence of flowers is transferred into liquids called flower remedies or simply flower essences. These essences capture the impact of flowers on our consciousness and affect our subtle bodies in such a way that healing occurs.

Each flower conveys a distinct imprint or etheric pattern which is transferred to the medium of water during essence preparation. Flower Essence Therapy is based on the insight that humans and all living things are profoundly related to nature and that archetypes that are found in the human psychological makeup have their healing counterpart in plant archetypes found in nature. By observing and experiencing the plant's form, habitat, color and fragrance, along with study of historical use and mythological lore of the plant, the particular healing property is uncovered. These interpretations are further refined by information receive through case studies and other clinical data.

Flower essences are a form of vibrational medicine. When we speak of vibration, we are merely using another synonym for frequency. Different frequencies of energy reflect varying rates of vibration. Matter and energy are two different manifestations of the same primary energetic substance of which everything in the universe is made, including our physical and subtle bodies, the subtle body referring to the subtle energy body which exists in the higher frequency range beyond the physical. The vibratory rate of the subtle body is simply faster. In order to alter our subtle bodies, we must administer energy that vibrates at frequencies beyond the physical plane. Vibrational medicines such as flower essences, contain such high frequency subtle energies. It is believed that disease manifest in the physical body only after disturbances of energy flow have already become crystallized in the subtle bodies. One of the best ways to alter dysfunctional patterns in the subtle bodies is to administer therapeutic doses of frequency-specific subtle energy in the form of vibrational medicines such as flower essences.

Universal energy determines the density of it's expression as matter. Matter which vibrates at a very slow frequency, is referred to as physical matter. That which vibrates faster than the speed of light is known as subtle matter. Subtle matter is as real as dense matter; its vibratory rate is simply faster. In order to alter the subtle body, we must administer energy that vibrates at frequencies beyond the physical plane. Vibrational medicines such as flower essences, contain such high frequency subtle energies. It is believed that disease manifests in the physical body only after disturbances of energy flow have already become crystallized in the subtle bodies. One of the best ways to alter dysfunctional patterns in the subtle bodies is to administer therapeutic doses of frequency-specific subtle energy in the for of vibrational medicines such as flower essences.

Although flower essence remedies have been known in India, China and by the Australian aboriginals and native peoples of the world for centuries, one of the most respected names associated with their use in modern times is Dr. Edward Bach of England.

Bach was born in 1886. Until the end of 1918 he practiced orthodox medicine specializing in bacteriology and immunology. His increased understanding of health and disease led him to the study of homeopathy which he practiced for ten years.

In 1928 Bach acquired two wild flowers, impatiens and mimulus, which he homeopathically prepared and clinic used with excellent results. He soon understood that there was great healing power in flowers, and he gradually developed his own methods of preparing flower essences. He perceived that different emotional and personality factors contribute toward a predisposition to illness, fear and negative attitudes being the most significant of these factors. Medical science is only now beginning to address this remarkable insight into the relationship between illness and the emotions. Bach perceive that the illness-personality link was an outgrowth of dysfunctional energetic patterns within the subtle bodies and that illness was a reflection of disharmony between the physical personality and the Higher Self or soul. Dr. Bach said: …

”Every soul in incarnation is down here for the specific purpose of gaining experience and understanding, and of perfecting his personality towards those ideals laid down by the Soul. Let everyone remember that his Soul has laid down for him a particular work, and that unless he does this work, though perhaps not consciously, he will inevitably raise a conflict between his Soul and personality which of necessity reacts in the form of physical illness.”

In the early 1930's, He left his successful practice and began gathering wildflowers to develop his thirty eight Flower Remedies which are now utilized by health care practitioners throughout the world. Edward Bach was a pioneering thinker and spiritual seeker who discovered a link between stress, emotions, and illness long before the issue was addressed by contemporary physicians. Dr. Bach sought to find a simple, natural way to balance the physical and emotional systems. He searched for a cure in nature and was led to the healing properties of homeopathic remedies and finally to the essences of flowers.

He found that he could place the flowers of a particular species on the surface of a bowl of spring water for several hours in sunlight and obtain powerful vibrational tinctures. The subtle effects of sunlight charged the water with an energetic imprint of the flower's vibrational signature or personality.

Dr. Bach's remedies were used to treat the emotional reactions to disease as well as the temperaments that lead to eventual disease in the body. He believed that fear, especially, depressed the mentality, thus causing disharmony in the physical and magnetic bodies and paves the way for invasion by disease. The real cause of disease lies in our own personality. Since the Bach Flowers were introduced, research and interest in the healing properties of flowers has continued to grow and expand and flower essences are now made on every continent.

From the beginning of history, it has been known that within nature has been placed the means to heal all forms of illness and suffering. As human culture evolved, however, the quest for objective knowledge and technological mastery separated human consciousness from Nature to the point that our inner relationship to it as the source of healing was all but lost. Thankfully there is a growing movement toward re-alignment with nature occurring in our time. Flower essences are among those evolutionary steps in health care that combine the clarity of modern science with a new spiritual awareness of Nature.

Flowers heal by introducing into the human energy body the vibration of their unique trait, personality or character. With the introduction of the properly prescribed essence, the personality begins to vibrate more closely in harmony with the soul. Flower essence work deeply with one's inner being. They assist people with their next step in life, to break through limitations and actualize undeveloped potential, an if all this wasn't enough physical healing often occurs as a result.
